Neil Ritchie, Local Business Unit Manager, Low Voltage AC Drives, ABB writes: In business, people often talk of ‘going the extra mile’, whether it’s directly for the companies we work for or for our customers. But a team of athletes from ABB Drives Alliance member Quantum Controls, went far beyond this level of effort when they cycled and paddled over 50 miles in the Race the Sun 2012 to raise £2,000 for medical research.

Team Quantum, made up of Billy Maitland, Kevin Brown, Catherine Lightfoot and Dave Mercer, where the winners of the mixed team category, beating 24 other teams. They completed the grueling course in 9 hours 46 minutes, placing them 18th overall for the event.

Taking place in the Lake District, the event involved a nine mile climb up mountains as well as technically challenging off-road sections. The canoe section was a chance for the team to rest their legs!

Congratulations to Team Quantum for winning their category but most importantly for making so much money for such a worthy cause. The pain and huge effort involved were not enough to put them off and they vow to be back even stronger next year to defend their title!
