Ian Allan, Local Business Unit Manager - Motors & Generators, ABB writes: Here’s a sobering thought: we are nearly 18 months away from IE3 motors becoming mandatory. Yes, it has been two years since IE2 arrived and industry realised that energy efficiency was no longer a choice but a necessity. Yet, even though we are so close to IE3 motors from 7.5 to 375 kW being the only choice, I fear that there are still many out there who don’t realise that 1st January 2015 is the cut-off date. From that date, the only way an IE2 motor can be used is together with a variable-speed drive. To help industry understand its options, ABB in the UK is offering two services. One is an open day at various ABB locations throughout the country during which we will demonstrate the motor choices available to industry. To register your interest email: energy@gb.abb.com or telephone 07000 MOTORS. The second is an on-line tool that we call Optimizer that quickly identifies the optimum motor for any MEPS (minimum energy performance standards) worldwide and gives easy access to technical documentation. The Optimizer can be found at www.abb.com/motors&generators. It is available as a web browser or as an iPAD app.
