Since July 2013, the Environment Agency has issued over £235,000 in penalties to companies that have not complied with the scheme, with the companies affected named and listed on the UK governments’ website along with the reason the penalty is issued.
This makes compliance to the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme a much more desirable and a less reputation damaging option, than the more public ‘naming and shaming’ currently used by the Environment Agency to deal with non-compliant parties.
Failing to register on-time, disclose information, submit complete and accurate registrations, provide foot print reports, submit annual reports and maintain evidence packs of data are just a few of the infractions that are punishable under the rules of the scheme.
So what is the overall aim of the scheme?
The scheme covers non-energy intensive organisations operating in the private and public sectors. These parties are estimated to account for 10 percent of the UK’s overall greenhouse gas emissions. These organisations include large retailers and offices, hotel chains, utility companies, NHS Trusts and hospitals, schools, universities and government departments and authorities.
The scheme is designed to make these businesses more energy efficient and therefore reduce CO2 emission. The scheme makes businesses accountable for the carbon emissions they produce, and helps reduce them by using the purchase of allowances as a financial incentive for businesses to focus on a longer-term emissions reduction strategy.
This forms part of the UK government’s overall commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050, compared to 1990 levels, as required under the Climate Change Act 2008.
The scheme is designed to cost less for companies that reduce their energy usage pro-actively, and more for those that don’t.
