ABB were nominated in two categories: Supplier of the Year and, along with long-term client Tata Steel, PIA Technical Innovation (projects) – once again demonstrating the regard in which our pump-specific drives are held by experts across the industry.
ABB’s variable-speed drives (VSDs) are incorporated into many varied pump applications, delivering total energy and cost savings of an estimated 11 billion kWh per year. These achievements, as well as ABB’s dedicated pump-specific drives, were deemed by a panel of independent industry specialists and representatives to be worthy of a place as finalist in the Supplier of the Year category.
ABB’s DriveSave scheme was also recognised in a joint nomination for Technical Innovation of the Year along with Tata Steel, Europe’s second largest steel producer. Together with the in-house engineering team at Tata Steel’s Port Talbot facility, ABB embarked on an ambitious plant-wide series of energy saving projects.
Tata Steel was already well acquainted with the benefits that VSDs can deliver having used them in larger applications for some time, however this project involved installing 64 smaller drives from 15 kW to 200kW. The results were remarkable; ABB’s variable-speed drives are now saving Tata Steel 4.4 MW of energy every single hour of every single day. One cooling tower alone is now saving £14,000 per week in energy costs.
We are enormously proud to have our drives nominated and our innovation recognised in two such competitive categories. If you didn't attend, this video gives a good overall idea of how the event went on the night.
Congratulations to all of the eventual winners, and hopefully we’ll see you again next year at PIA 2016!
