A more effective solution to manage the opportunity energy savings represent for UK business is to work towards achieving ISO 50001 Energy Management System compliance. This is an international standard that is designed to help businesses continually assess their energy use and energy efficiency to bring about longer term improvements. It is also recognised as a route to compliance with the ESOS scheme, and could be more effective to bring more efficient technology into UK businesses.
The ISO 50001 Energy Management System works in the same way as other existing ISO standards such as quality (ISO 9001) and environmental management (ISO 14001). The likelihood is that your business already complies to the ISO quality standard, so the “Plan, Do, Check, Act” approach used for the Energy Management System standard will be familiar, making the journey to compliance more straight forward.
ISO 50001 requires businesses to carry out energy audits across their entire operation and account for usage levels, and unlike ESOS gives companies a framework to use to implement savings projects. There is also a requirement under ISO 50001 to continually review energy usage and wastage, and requires annual reports to be done to document this and show where further savings can be made.
This goes much further in addressing how to get businesses to take energy efficiency more seriously than the ESOS scheme, and is a more effective way to encourage investment in more efficient technologies and solutions in the long term.
