John Guthrie, Energy Efficiency Manager, ABB writesWhen the team here at ABB developed our first AC drive in the 1970s, we knew it had the potential to change the world. That’s why we kept count of each one we installed!

Recently we smashed through a colossal milestone, when our 10 millionth drive rolled off the assembly line at ABB’s factory in Beijing.

The lucky recipient of drive number 10 million was Wuhan Guide Electric Co. Ltd. of China. It’s an ACS880 industrial drive, and has already been pressed into duty helping to manufacture electric control systems for port cranes. The ACS880 is an all-compatible drive so it could feasibly have ended up almost anywhere, but we’re glad it’s managed to find a good home.

China is home to 70 percent of the world’s largest commercial ports, and these ports rely on automated cranes to productively and accurately move enormous volumes of goods. Small- and medium-sized ports are coming under increasing pressure to automate more and more of their operations so that they can compete with large ports in terms of productivity and safety, and attract the increasingly larger “megaships” with their heavier containers.

Energy efficient drives like ABB’s ACS880 create a win-win situation for users, allowing them to improve productivity while reducing the environmental impact of their operations.

The rapid growth of China’s vast industrial sector has necessitated effective power solutions to match demand, and ABB drives have been a key component in the safe, reliable and efficient delivery of electrical power to applications all over the country. Indeed, the installed base of ABB drives in
China has altogether saved 201 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity – enough to power Beijing for two years .

40 years after ABB developed its first variable-speed drive (VSD), it’s staggering to think that 90 percent of the world’s industrial motors are still operated without any form of motor control . And yet reason number 10 million just rolled off the production line. Why not talk to one of ABB’s authorised value providers to find out how much energy and money a VSD could save for your business.
